As broken as it ever was

I woke up Wednesday morning, in denial.
I don't care who is our next president
by comparison to the confirmation I've received
I thought we'd come far, and we'd never go back
to the way things were
But this old world is as broken as it ever was

I got on the bus, on my way to class
And I looked at my driver, a man with brown skin
And I began to weep for the first time
I thought we'd come far, and we'd never go back
to the way things were
But this old world is as broken as it ever was

I thought we'd begin to repair
America would prove this old optimist right
as she chose justice and love
over hate
But then I heard about Natasha, a fellow Baylor student
and I heard about the increase in racially charged incidents on Baylor's campus
and I thought,
My God, My God, why have we forsaken you?

This old world is as broken as it ever was.

But you know what, I will wake up tomorrow
And maybe by then I will be ready to believe again
That, in the end, LOVE WINS
and we get to choose to be part of that fight
And this old world is also just as beautiful as it ever was
