Homemade toothpaste

Actually, it's technically "tooth soap", which is like toothpaste, only better!

Did you know that your tooth enamel can actually heal itself? I didn't. The problem is, almost all commercial toothpaste contains silica, which coats your teeth and keeps your saliva from remineralizing your enamel. Hmm, who'd have thunk it? I never noticed before I started using tooth soap, but now that I've switched, I can't stand the dried up, coaty feeling that traditional tooth paste leaves in my mouth. Of all of the homemade recipes I've shared these past few weeks, tooth soap might be my favorite. Or my homemade deodorant. Or my no 'poo shampoo and contidioner. Can they all be my favorite? :)

Yes, it has soap in it. Yes, you can taste it a little the first few times you use it. However, I don't taste soap at all anymore, and I like the taste of my homemade tooth soap. I also love that it doesn't leave a taste in my mouth that lasts for an hour or more and ruins my orange juice. I know we've all had that problem! :)

Just like with the deodorant, it's important to use coconut oil because it has antibacterial properties.

I've adapted this recipe from the one I found at Homestead Wannabees.

Here's what you need:  8 teaspoon of unscented or peppermint castile soap
1 cup of coconut oil (warm enough to be liquified)
                                     1 teaspoon stevia
                                     1 teaspoon peppermint oil
New Soap Dispenser (you don't want old hand soap flavors mixing in)
                                     Cup for blending
Immersion blender (a regular blender would work, too, I'm sure)
                                     Funnel

Here's what you do:          Pour all ingredients in together and blend until well mixed and foamy
Using funnel, pour your tooth soap into your soap dispenser

Done! Just like my other recipes, this one takes less than 10 minutes, and that includes getting everything out and putting it away when you're finished.

To use: Squirt one pump onto your toothbrush and brush as you normally do. Enjoy the clean, smooth feeling of your teeth!

As an added bonus, tooth soap is not as abrasive and helps your enamel to keep a natural balance, so this recipe is especially beneficial for people with sensitive teeth (like me).

Thank for joining me in my series on homemade cleaners for you home and body! On wednesday, I'll be sharing tips for cleaning from some of my readers.

Friday, I'll start a new series - Sourdough!

Oh, and start thinking about cloth diapers because I've got some exciting news coming up!

Somewhere in the midst of all this fun, we're going to have a giveaway, so you don't want to miss a post!

  1. I can't wait to try all the new recipes you have shared. I made my laundry soap this weekend and I am in love!! I was super easy and very cheap. I also cleaned my WHOLE house with vinegar. LOL

    Here's what I did:
    1 bar Fels Naptha Soap
1 cup of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
    1 cup Borax
1/2 cup Dawn (or any liquid dish soap)

In a saucepan heat 4 cups water and the Fels Naptha soap grated. (Grated is very important. I chopped and it was very hard to melt.) Stir over medium heat until the soap is dissolved. Do not boil! Pour 3 gallons HOT water into 5 gallon bucket. Add soup mixture. Add other ingredients and stir until dissolved.

I only paid about $8 (this includes the new 5 gallon bucket. Get one at Home Depot) and still have supplies for many more batches. Hope this was helpful.

  2. Also where do you buy items such as peppermint oil, castile soap, or stevia?

  3. Great! I'll have to try the laundry soap soon. My mom ordered the peppermint oil. I got the castile soap from whole foods, and the Stevia from my grocery store. I'll try to find a good deal online to order these things because I know they are not easy to find just anywhere.

Hint:This must be how the Harry Potter's Bertie Bott's vomet flavored jelly beans are flavored.

  8. Does the laundry detergent work on HE washers?

  9. According to About.com and a few other sights, homemade detergent is great for HE washers because it is low sudsing. As for the amount, most say start out with the same amount and cut back if you need to.
